This notice highlights which PHP versions are still supported, the risks of running outdated releases, and why it’s a good time to upgrade.
Why PHP Updates Are Important
PHP is the foundation of many popular sites and applications, including WordPress, Joomla, and Laravel. Regular updates bring important improvements such as:
- Security – Fixes to protect your site against vulnerabilities.
- Performance – Faster response times and better efficiency.
- Compatibility – Support for new plugins, themes, and frameworks.
Once a version reaches its “end-of-life” (EOL), it no longer gets fixes from the PHP community, leaving websites at risk.

PHP Support Policy at HostAfrica Kenya
To keep sites safe and reliable, HostAfrica KE follows international best practices when it comes to PHP version management.
Currently Supported Versions (Free and Maintained)
- PHP 8.1 and above
These versions are fully supported and available at no extra cost.
Legacy Versions (Security-Patched Only – Paid Option)
- PHP 8.1 (from 1 January 2026)
- PHP 8.0
- PHP 7.x
- PHP 5.x
- PHP 4.x
These older versions are no longer officially supported by the PHP team. However, we provide patched versions to help clients who still need them.
Why Upgrading Matters
While patched legacy versions are available, upgrading to the latest supported PHP version is highly recommended. Benefits include:
