How to create FTP Accounts in DirectAdmin
If you have several websites hosted under a single hosting account or external developers working on your site, setting up FTP accounts is a good practice to restrict access to certain parts of your website.
Without direct access to your website’s files, it would be difficult to perform certain functions, such as bulk file uploads, editing/retrieving files, installing plugins and themes, resolving compatibility issues, and changing file permissions. Therefore, you need an FTP account to connect to your server and manage your website’s files.
In this tutorial, you will learn the basics of file management via FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and creating FTP accounts in DirectAdmin.
To create an FTP account in the DirectAdmin control panel;
- Log in to DirectAdmin.
- Under Account Manager, click on the FTP Management tab.
- Click the Create FTP Account button.
- From the drop-down menu, assign the new FTP user account a domain name.
- Enter the FTP password.
- FTP account directory: Select the path for your FTP account directory.
- Domain: Ftp account with the root directory in the domains home directory (one up from the public_html)
- Ftp: Ftp account with the root directory in the domains public_ftp directory
- User: Ftp account with the root directory as the user’s name in the public_html directory
- Custom: /home/username
Then click the Create button. The new user will be added automatically to the dashboard.
To remove an FTP account in DirectAdmin;
- Navigate to the Account Manager section in the DirectAdmin Dashboard.
- Click on the FTP Management tab.
- Select the FTP account you want to remove.
- Click on the Delete Button.
- On the next page, confirm that you want to remove the FTP account by clicking on the Delete button.
FTP may seem intimidating on the surface, but they are handy tools for easy navigation to help you accomplish all file-related tasks on your website.
