How to Manage your Files in cPanel

Under the Files section in your cPanel, you can perform functions such as uploading files to your cPanel, backup your website, and also manage files via FTP(File Transfer Protocol), where you can upload, read and retrieve files associated with your website.

In this tutorial, we will cover how to navigate the Files section of the cPanel and complete basic file management tasks.

File Manager

cPanel’s File Manager makes it easy for you to browse through your website’s directories and manage all your files directly. To access your website files, follow these steps;

• Login to cPanel.
• Click on the File Manager icon.

• Click on the name of the directory that you want to open in the left sidebar. The directory’s contents will appear in the right pane.

• You can click the + icon to expand a directory and view the contents of a subfolder. To collapse a directory, click on the – icon.

Ensure you proceed with caution when making any changes in this section to avoid deleting important files that could have an impact on how your website works.

Create a New Folder/File

To create a new folder, follow these steps:

• In the File Manager window, click the + Folder icon.

• Type the name of the new folder in the text box that shows up on the screen.

• Make sure that the path is where you want to create the folder.
• Click Create New Folder. cPanel will create the folder.

To create a new file, follow these steps:

• In the File Manager window, click the + File icon:

• Type the name of the new file in the new file name text box.

• Make sure that the path is where you want to create the file in the text box.
• Click Create New File.

Uploading a File Using File Manager

If you want to add a file, such as a large video or images files to use on your website, you can follow these steps;

• Click on the File Manager icon.
• Click on the folder where you want to upload the file to.
• Click the Upload button in the top navigation menu.

• Then drag and drop the file you want to upload or select the file from your local drive.

FTP Accounts

If you have several websites or you have external developers working on your website, you can set up FTP accounts on cPanel so that external users can access a restricted part of your website.

When you create an FTP account, it allows external users to upload and download files to and from that location using the username and password.

Use these steps to add a new FTP account;

• Under the Files section, click on FTP accounts.

• Type the username for the FTP account in the Login text box.

• From the drop-own menus pick the domain name that the new user account will be assigned to.
• Type the account password.
• Retype the account password In the Password (Again) text box.
• Type the directory to which the FTP account will have access in the Directory text box. By default, this directory is located under your public_html directory. If left blank, users will also have access to the root.
• Specify the quota for the FTP account. By default, the quota is unlimited.
• Click Create FTP Account.

After you create the FTP account, the new user will be added automatically.
