The difference between Parked, Addon and subdomains.

parked, addon, subdomain, what's the difference?

Question: I would like to know the difference between Parked, Addon and subdomains?
Below are the answers you seek.
Subdomain
A subdomain is simply a second website with its unique content. The website does not have a new domain name but instead uses an existing domain name e.g. yourdomain.co.ke and changes the www to another name. The subdomain will look like; blog.yourdomain.co.ke, customercare.yourdomain.co.ke etc.

Addon domain
An addon domain is a second stand-alone website with its own unique content. This type of domain does require you to register the domain name before adding it as an addon domain. It means if you do want to host another extremely different domain on your account, this would be a perfect solution. Think of it as having several domains in one control panel (cPanel).
E.g. if you have a domain yourdomain.co.ke and would like to host otherdomain.co.ke in the same hosting package, you can add it as an addon.

Parked domain
As the name hints, a parked domain is not a unique website but instead is more or less like a website alias. More so, it is an additional domain hosted on your account, and displays the same website as your primary domain. When does one use a parked domain?

  1. When you have more than one domain that should lead to your primary domain.
  2. When you have common misspellings of your domain name that you would like to register.
  3. When you need a parked domain for which you do not have a website.
  4. When you want to have more than one web address for advertising purpose.
