Checklist before transferring domains

A checklist before transferring a domain name

Checklist guide before domain transfer:

  1. Verify that the domain name is eligible for transfer: Some domain names, such as those that have recently been registered or transferred, may not be eligible for transfer for a certain period.
  2. Obtain the domain name’s transfer authorization code (also known as an EPP code): This code is required to initiate the transfer and can typically be obtained from the current registrar.
  3. Check the expiration date of the domain name: A domain name must be valid and not expired to be transferred, At least 10 days before the expiration date.
  4. Make sure that any privacy protection services on the domain name are disabled: Privacy protection services can prevent the transfer of a domain name and delay the process.
  5. Confirm the transfer fee and any additional charges: Some registrars may charge a fee to transfer a domain name.
  6. Verify the contact information for the domain name: The registrant, administrative, and technical contact information should be up-to-date and working.
  7. Expect a confirmation email: After initiating the transfer, you will receive a confirmation email from the current registrar.
  8. Approve the transfer: Follow the instructions in the confirmation email to approve the transfer.
  9. Wait for the transfer to be completed: The transfer process can take up to 7-14 days to complete the transfer.
  10. Updating Nameserver settings: Once the transfer is completed, update the DNS settings for the domain name to ensure it points to the correct website or email server.

Note: you can do this before the transfer or after, this is because, during the domain transfer, you will not be able to change the nameservers
