4 Reasons why you should get domain ID protection!

One of the questions commonly asked is ”why do I require domain privacy protection?” Is it that important and why not give fake details instead?
What is domain ID/ privacy protection?
Domain ID/ privacy protection is a feature that hides your registrant information(Information you provide such as phone number, email and address while registering a domain name), which is available on the public WHOIS database.
Why is domain ID protection necessary?
1. Protect your personal information. Imagine this, your personal details are publicly displayed and accessible to anyone through the whois database. A lot of times, clients have gotten calls or emails from stalkers, spammers and fraudsters. Anyone could fall victim if your details are publicly accessible.
2. Prevents unsolicited marketing. With your personal contact information publicly available, salespeople and con artist have access to information they need to get to you.
A client furiously stomped into our offices accusing us of sharing her information with marketers. Days after purchasing her domain name, she was receiving emails about SEO services, social media marketing, freelance opportunities, email marketing etc. You have to take charge of your contact information. This is exactly why you will need domain ID protection, otherwise, you will be an open target.
3. Protect yourself from domain hijacking or theft. This is also known as domain spoofing. It happens where the registration of a domain name is changed without the authorization of the owner. It happens mostly through phishing or social engineering, where a hacker tricks the registrant to get access to their domain. The good thing, we by default have all domains locked hence transfers can’t be done until we unlock the domain for the client.
4. Minimize spamming. Have you ever received such an email with similar content? (See below) You could easily act on it on seeing that your domain name will expire soon. This hoax is often tailored with using domain name details available on whois database. You can avoid contacting us all the time to help you check if the email is genuine or not. FYI, all emails from us always have our logo and contact details.

My advice…
Depending on how tolerant you are with marketers, scammers, spammers and con artist, then you can weigh your options. At the end of the day, it is not a requirement but a question of your willingness to invest on domain ID protection. To some it’s a necessity, to others it’s a waste of money! I prefer to have my details protected.
